So you want to play blackjack. Here are 5 tips to avoid losing money and start saving.

Tip #1

8 & 8 versus dealer 2 through 9. The common mistake most players make is they either hit or stand when mathematically you should be splitting your 8s. It isn’t that you will make more money by making this play but rather you will save money and lose less on average when faced with this situation. Don’t be a sucker and split your 8s.

Tip #2

Taking insurance on blackjack versus dealer Ace. People think taking insurance is the safe bet but this is just throwing away money. If you look at any insurance industry you should know that insurance is offered by companies to make money off of situations that do or do not happen. In this case this is insurance to protect your blackjack from the dealer getting a blackjack. Many land based casino dealers will recommend insurance but this is not something you should ever consider. This will cost you money on average and you can do the math. Next time a dealer recommends insurance ask them if the average payout is better with or without. If they say with insurance then they clearly don’t know what they are doing and I would request a pit boss to explain the decision. These dealers are supposed to know the odds and stats for every situation.

Tip #3

Splitting 10s. Well just never ever do this. I see some players make this play and it is painful on the eyes to watch someone make a stupid play like this. Never split your 10s and stand.

Tip #4

Player 9 versus dealer 6. This is a double down opportunity and most don’t take advantage of this situation. To get more money from this player double down without thinking.

Tip #5

Ace 6 versus dealer 6. This is a soft 17 and sounds like a great hand. Some players stand and others hit. The optimal play is to double down as it will give you the highest payout on average. You can even double down Ace 6 versus dealer 4.
